Sitting here this evening thinking forward to the possible summer we may or may not have I came across a board of images from a photographer I hadn’t heard of before, but am glad I have now.
His name -LeRoy Grannis.
From what I’ve read he seems to be considered by many to be the premier photographer of California’s thriving surf culture in the 60’s and 70’s. Like most documentary/ambient photographers he started out not as a professional – but as a hobbyist and didn’t begin his career until he was 42. At the start of 1959 America was entering the golden age of surf mania and Grannis found himself with an East German 35mm camera and one of those endless summers.
